Stock cabinets
Stock cabinets come in fixed sizes, usually in two-inch or three-inch increments. They are the least expensive and the fastest to get, which is why they fill spec homes and quick flips. The catch is fit. When your wall does not match the standard sizes, the gaps get covered with filler strips, and the kitchen ends up with dead space and a slightly off look that is hard to name but easy to feel.
Semi-custom cabinets
Semi-custom starts from standard boxes but opens up finishes, door styles, and some sizing and modifications. It is a clear step up in flexibility for a moderate jump in price, and for many straightforward kitchens it is the sensible middle. You still work within a menu, but the menu is much longer.
Custom cabinets
Custom cabinetry is made to order for your exact kitchen. Any dimension, any wood, any finish, any storage configuration. Nothing is forced to fit. In older Boulder homes with out-of-square walls, or in a new build with a specific architectural detail, that precision is the difference between cabinetry that looks placed and cabinetry that looks built for the room. Made-to-order cabinetry also tends to use better materials and joinery, which is why it is backed by a limited lifetime warranty.
The cost most people miss
Stock looks cheapest on day one. But filler panels, compromised layouts, and finishes that wear can cost you in lost storage, in a kitchen that never feels right, and in a replacement sooner than you wanted. Custom asks for more up front and gives back fit and years. Over the life of a kitchen you intend to keep, that is often the lower number, not the higher one.
